Strong decrease in road traffic fatalities

According to preliminary figures from the police, 16 people were killed in road traffic accidents last month, ten fewer than in September 2007. Road accidents have claimed 204 lives in the first three quarters of 2008, compared to 169 in the same period last year.

Thus, the strong increase in the number of fatalities relative to last year shows signs of flattening out. However, there are considerable fluctuations in the number of fatalities from month to month, and last years’ figure for September was high compared to the preceding year.

The fatalities last month included six vehicle drivers, one passenger, five motorcyclists, one moped rider, two pedestrians and one other road user. Injury figures have decreased. 8 424 people have been injured in road traffic accidents so far this year. The corresponding preliminary figure for 2007 was 8 945, and the final figure was 9 111.

Regional differences

Hedmark country has seen the largest number of road traffic accidents so far in 2008. 19 people have lost their lives on the road in this county, one person more than at the same time last year. Møre and Romsdal has seen the largest increase in fatalities, both in absolute and percentage terms, with 18 people killed. The corresponding figure for 2007 was five. In absolute terms, Oppland has seen the largest decrease with 12 fewer fatalities.

Police figures

The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are often not reported to the police, and may therefore be underrepresented in the figures. The total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Around 27 per cent of the casualties reported thus far in 2008 belonged to this category. Some people registered in this category may be uninjured, and figures are subject to change.
