More fatalities and fewer injuries

More people have been killed in road traffic accidents so far this year than in the same period last year. In the last three months, however, the number of deaths has been lower than in the corresponding months in 2007. 23 people lost their lives in October, four fewer than in the same month last year.

The strong increase in number of fatalities relative to last year shows signs of flattening out. However, there are considerable fluctuations in the number of fatalities from month to month, and last years’ figure for October was high compared to the preceding year.

The fatalities last month included thirteen vehicle drivers, four passengers, one motorcyclist and five pedestrians. 226 people have been killed in road traffic accidents so far this year, compared with 196 in the first ten months of 2007. Injury figures have decreased. 9 428 people have been injured in road traffic accidents so far this year according to preliminary figures, compared with 10 107 in the same period of 2007. The figure was later adjusted to 10 203.

Motorcyclists and moped riders

There have only been minor fluctuations in the number of motorcyclists and moped riders killed in road traffic accidents in the period from January to October over the last ten years. 38 road users from this group lost their lives in the first ten months of 2008, compared with 37 last year. The average number of deaths per year in this group over the last ten years is 37. Injury figures remain stable. The preliminary figures show 1 085 injuries so far this year, compared with 1 139 in the same period of 2007. This figure was later adjusted to 1 144.

Police figures

The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are often not reported to the police, and may therefore be underrepresented in the figures. The total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Around 27 per cent of the casualties reported thus far in 2008 belonged to this category. Some people registered in this category may be uninjured, and figures are subject to change.
