Fewer fatalities on the roads in March
A total of 398 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in March. Twelve lost their lives and 618 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures.
Preliminary figures for March 2008 showed that 20 people were killed and 862 were injured. The fatality figure was later adjusted to 21. The average figures for the ten-year period 2000-2009 were 17 fatalities and 821 injuries in March traffic. The twelve people killed in road traffic accidents last month constituted seven drivers of a car, one car passenger, one motorcyclist and three pedestrians.
Fewer people killed in the first quarter of 2009
The preliminary figures show that 39 persons were killed and 2 142 injured on the road in the first quarter this year. Comparative figures for the same period last year were 60 killed and 2 555 injured. The average figures for the first quarter in 2000-2009 were 55 persons killed and 2 476 injured.
Police figuresThe statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less serious accidents and injuries are often not reported to the police, and may therefore be underrepresented in the figures. The total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Around 29 per cent of the casualties reported thus far in 2009 belonged to this category. Some people registered in this category may be uninjured, and figures are subject to change. |
