310 killed in Norwegian traffic last year
310 persons were killed and 12 544 were injured on Norwegian roads in 2002, according to preliminary figures. Comparative figures for 2001 showed that 274 persons were killed and 11 350 injured.
A total of 8 790 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in 2002, according to preliminary figures. Preliminary figures for 2001 showed that 274 persons were killed and 11 350 were injured on Norwegian roads, while the final figures for 2001 were 275 persons killed and 11 522 injured.
Many killed in January and May
36 persons were killed in Norwegian traffic in each of the months of January and May. In comparison, 14 persons were killed on Norwegian roads in March. The number of injuries peaked in June and August, when 1 374 and 1 324 persons were injured on Norwegian roads, respectively.
Road traffic accidents in Nordic countries
During the first eleven months of 2002, 488 persons were killed in road traffic accidents in Sweden, 429 were killed in Denmark and 384 in Finland. The comparative figure for Norway was 281 persons killed. Corresponding figures for the first eleven months of 2001 were 518 persons killed in Swedish traffic, 388 in Danish traffic, 400 in Finish traffic and 257 in Norwegian traffic.
Monthly statistics postponed
Shortcomings in the data Statistics Norway receives from Norwegian police have lead to postponement of the publishing of monthly statistics on road traffic accidents. Monthly statistics for the first quarter of 2003 will be published together with final figures for 2002 later this year.
Figures for 1999-2001 presented in the table 1 are final.
