People seriously injured. January-December 2001-2011

Preliminary figures for 2010 were 210 killed and 673 seriously injured. The final figures were 208 and 714 respectively. The number of fatalities has been reduced by almost 19 per cent compared to 2010, and we have to go back to 1953 to find a lower number of persons killed on Norwegian roads, when the figure was 163. In the decade 2001-2010, there was an average of 250 killed and 931 seriously injured in road accidents, compared with 169 fatalities and 644 seriously injured in 2011.

Fewer fatalities among drivers and motorcyclists

In 2011, preliminary figures show that 88 drivers and 13 motorcyclists died in traffic. This is a decrease of 20 and 50 per cent respectively from the same period in 2010, where 110 drivers and 26 motorcyclists lost their lives. The average for the number of fatalities in the five-year period 2006-2010 was 112 drivers and 30 motorcyclists.

Fewer killed in the age group 20-24

In the age group 20-24 years, the number of fatalities in road accidents fell by 17. In 2010, 30 children in this age group were killed compared with 13 in 2011. The number seriously injured in this age group was 84 in 2011, approximately the same number as in 2010.

12 killed in road traffic in December

In December, the police registered 502 accidents on Norwegian roads. Twelve people died and 40 were severely injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures. The corresponding figures for December 2010 were 14 fatalities and 44 seriously injured. The number of seriously injured was adjusted to 54. Of the 12 fatalities last month, eight were drivers, three were passengers and one was an other road user.

Police figures

The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are often not reported to the police, and may therefore be underrepresented in the figures. The total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Around 19 per cent of the casualties reported so far this year belong to this category. Some people registered in this category may be uninjured, and figures are subject to change.
