Kindergarten fees continued to decrease

Norwegian kindergarten fees decreased with 1.4 per cent from January 2006 to August 2006, a lot less than in January 2006. Private kindergartens decreased their fees by 3.3 per cent while public kindergartens only had a marginal decline

Generally the private kindergartens fees fell more than public kindergarten's from January 2006 to August 2006. The lower decrease in public kindergarten fees can be explained by the fact that a majority of public kindergartens already had adjusted their fees down to the maximum fee in January 2006. Some private kindergartens however, waited for the government subsidy in January before adjusting their fees.

The greatest decrease for public kindergarten fees was in Agder and Rogaland, where fees fell by 0.8 per cent. There were only marginal changes in household payments for the rest of the country.

Private kindergarten fees fell by 3.3 per cent on average from January 2006 to August 2006. Oslo and Akershus kindergartens had the largest decrease in household payments.

From August 2005 to August 2006, kindergartens fees showed a strong decline of 15.2 per cent on the average for the whole country. During this period, public kindergartens fees fell somewhat more than the fees in private kindergartens. Household payments in public kindergartens showed an average decrease of 15.9 per cent, while fees in private kindergartens dropped by 14.3 per cent.

The decline in kindergarten fees for public kindergartens ranged from 13.1 to 17.3 per cent in the different regions.
