Increase in kindergarten fees

Norwegian kindergarten fees showed an average increase of 2.9 per cent from August 2006 to January 2007. The increase was due to the new maximum fee for 2007 set by the Norwegian Parliament. Fees in private kindergartens increased by 2.5 per cent while in public kindergartens the increase was 3.2 per cent.

Slightly higher increase in public kindergartens fees

The Norwegian parliament increased the maximum level for kindergarten fees in 2007 from NOK 2 250 per month and NOK 24 750 per year to NOK 2 330 per month and NOK 25 630 per year. On average the increase in fees was slightly higher in public kindergartens than in private kindergartens from August 2006 to January 2007. The regions Agder/Rogaland and Oslo/Akershus had the highest fee increase of 3.9 and 3.8 per cent respectively. Municipalities in Northern Norway had the lowest increase of 2.0 per cent in the same period. For the remaining regions the increase in kindergarten fees was between 2.3 and 3.4 per cent.

Private kindergartens in South Eastern Norway had the highest increase in fees in the period, while Hedmark and Oppland had the lowest increase.

Development in kindergarten fees from January 2006 to January 2007

From January 2006 to January 2007 there was a general increase in kindergarten fees of 1.4 per cent. Public kindergarten fees increased by 3.1 per cent while private kindergarten fees fell by 0.9 per cent in the same period.

Public kindergarten fees increased in all regions. Oslo and Akershus registered the highest increase of 3.8 per cent. Hedmark and Oppland and Northern Norway had the lowest increase of 2.0 and 2.1 per cent.

For private kindergartens the picture was more varied, but there was a decrease in kindergarten fees in most regions. The decrease in kindergarten fees was highest in Oslo and Akershus, while the highest increase was in South Eastern Norway.
