Significant reduction in kindergarten fees
From August 2005 to August 2006, the decreases in kindergarten fees for both public and private sectors were significant. The decrease was in response to the lowering of the kindergarten ceiling fees from NOK 2 750 in 2005 to NOK 2 250 in January 2006.
In public kindergartens, the average monthly payment excluding food costs for families paying minimum fees was NOK 1 263, while for families paying maximum fees it was NOK 2 249. This is a decrease of 17.3 and 18.3 per cent from August 2005, respectively. The monthly minimum fees ranged from NOK 379 in Rogaland county to NOK 2 250 in Oppland and Nordland counties. In majority of the counties, the maximum monthly payment was NOK 2 250.
Municipalites with low fees
For households with yearly incomes of NOK 250 000, 75 of 109 municipalities charged NOK 2 250 monthly. For families in this income level, Larvik, Årdal and Stavanger had the lowest monthly fees at NOK 750, 800 and 810, respectively. Amongst households with yearly incomes of NOK 500 000, Stavanger charged the lowest monthly fees of NOK 1 530.
Annual kindergarten fees charges including food costs for families with one child paying minimum fees averaged NOK 14 905, while families paying maximum fees averaged NOK 25 746, a decrease of 15.6 and 16.8 per cent respectively, compared to August 2005.
Significant decrease in private kindergarten fees
As of August 2006, the average monthly payment excluding food costs for families with one child in private kindergartens was NOK 2 241, a decrease of 15.2 per cent from August 2005. The region of Trøndelag had the lowest monthly payment excluding food costs at NOK 2 186 while Agder/ Rogaland had the highest monthly payment of 2 261.
