Increase in number of kindergarten employees

At the end of 2010, more than 277 100 children had a kindergarten place, which was an increase from the previous year of nearly 7 000 children. Meanwhile, the number of employees in kindergartens increased by 2 500 and now counts 87 400.

In 2010, about 91 per cent of the directors and educational leaders had an approved pre-school teacher education or other college education that qualified them to work with children. This is an increase of 2.5 percentage points from 2009 to 2010. Most of the employees were women; 10.3 per cent were men, which is an increase of 0.5 percentage points.

From 2009 to 2010 there was an increase of nearly 7 000 children in kindergarten. The largest increase was for the age group 1-2 years, where 4 800 more children were in kindergarten. In the age group 3-5 years, the increase was nearly 2 300 children. The percentage of children in these age groups increased by 1.6 and 0.3 percentage points respectively. A total of 78.8 per cent for the age group 1-2 years and 96.5 per cent for the age group 3-5 years attended kindergarten. Of all children aged 1-5 years, 89.3 per cent had a place in kindergarten. In addition, about 6 600 children attended open kindergartens.
