Nine out of ten children in kindergarten

At the end of 2013, 90 per cent of children aged 1-5 attended kindergarten. Ninety-two per cent of these children had full-time places, i.e. contracted hours of attendance of 41 hours or more per week. In total, 287 200 children attended kindergarten.

In the early 2000s, the proportion of children aged 1-5 who attended kindergarten was 60 per cent, while it has remained stable at 90 per cent since 2011.

In the last 13 years, the proportion of children aged 1-2 who attended kindergarten has increased by 42 percentage points. In the same period, the proportion of children aged 3-5 has increased by 17 percentage points. In recent years, the proportion of children with contracted hours of attendance of 41 hours or more per week has also increased.

At the end of 2013, Nord-Trøndelag and Troms had the highest proportion of children aged 1-5 who attended kindergarten, with 94.4 and 94.2 per cent respectively. Oslo had the lowest proportion, with 85 per cent.

Fewer kindergartens

While the number of children and the proportion of children have increased, the number of kindergartens has decreased since 2008. In total, there were 409 fewer kindergartens in 2013 than in 2008, which is a decrease of 6 per cent. The number of private kindergartens decreased by 282, while the number of public kindergartens decreased by 127 during the period 2008-2013.

93 600 employees

There were 93600 employees in kindergartens in 2013, which is an increase of 2 300 employees from the previous year. Nearly 9 per cent of all employees in primary functions in kindergartens were men.

Ninety-three per cent of the directors and educational leaders had an approved pre-school teacher education or other college education that qualified them to work with children. This is an increase of 1 percentage point from 2012 to 2013.
