At the end of 2006, 80 per cent of children aged 1-5 attended kindergarten. In total, 235 000 children attended kindergarten, an increase of more than 11 400 children from 2005. In addition, close to 7 500 children attended open kindergarten.

In 2006, the proportion of children aged 1-5 who attended kindergarten was 80 per cent. For children aged 1, about 50 per cent attended kindergarten. For children aged 5, 95 per cent attended kindergarten. Almost 194 000 children attended kindergarten full-time.

Of the total increase of 11 400 children in kindergarten approximately 4 800 were in public kindergarten, while 6 600 were in private kindergartens. In total there were 127 300 children in public kindergartens and 107 700 in private kindergartens.

46 per cent from linguistic and cultural minorities

At the end of 2006, 15 700 children from linguistic and cultural minorities attended kindergarten. 46 per cent of children aged 0-5 with immigrant background attended kindergarten.

At the end of 2006, 69 655 people were employed in kindergartens, which is an increase of 4 927 from the previous year. 91 percent of all employees in kindergartens were women, while only 9 per cent were men.
