15 000 more children in kindergartens

At the end of 2007, 84 per cent of children aged 1-5 attended kindergarten. In total 250 000 children attended kindergarten, an increase of 15 000 children from 2006.

The number of children aged 1-5 who attended kindergarten increased with 4 percentage points from 2006. 69 per cent of children 1-2 years attended kindergarten, whereas 94 per cent of children aged 3-5 did.

In total, there were 6 600 kindergartens in 2007, an increase of nearly 200 from the previous year. Of the total increase of 15 000 children in kindergarten, approximately 7 100 came in public kindergartens and 7 700 in private kindergartens. In total there were 134 400 children in public kindergartens and 115 500 in private kindergartens.

At the end of 2007, 76 100 people were employed in kindergartens, an increase of 6 400 from the previous year. Altogether they worked 75 800 man-years. Nearly 8 per cent of all employees in primary functions in kindergartens were men.
