At the end of 2009, 25 100 children from linguistic and cultural minorities attended kindergarten. Sixty-eight per cent of children aged 1-5 with an immigrant background attended kindergarten.

The number of children from linguistic and cultural minorities in kindergarten has increased in recent years. About 9 per cent of all children in kindergarten had this background in 2009. In comparison, there were 6 per cent of children in kindergartens with linguistic and cultural minorities in 2005.

At the end of 2009, 88 per cent of children aged 1-5 attended kindergarten. Seventy-seven per cent of children aged 1-2 years attended kindergarten, whereas 96 per cent of children aged 3-5 attended. Nearly 69 per cent of children aged 1 year attended kindergarten; an increase of 2.8 percentage points from last year. Of children aged 5 years, more than 97 per cent attended kindergarten, which is a small increase of 0.5 percentage points.

A total of 85 000 people were employed in kindergartens at the end of 2009, and in total they worked 68 100 man-years. Nearly 10 per cent of employees were men, which is a small increase of 0.6 percentage points since the previous year.
