Well over 30 000 university graduates
More than 31 400 persons graduated from Norwegian universities and university colleges in school year 2002/2003 - a 7 per cent increase from previous school year.
More than half of the students graduated from a state college. State and private tertiary institutions recorded a rise in the number of graduates, while the universities registered a slight decrease. Graduates from doctoral programs are not included.
One of four graduated long tertiary education
24 per cent of the total number of graduates did complete a long tertiary education - with duration of more than four years. Ten years ago, this applied for 22 per cent of the graduates. Men represented half of the graduates in long tertiary education in 2003/2004. Ten years ago the percentage almost amounted to 60. Women completed 65 per cent of the short and medium tertiary educations last school year. In comparison, women's proportion in 1993/1994 came to 58 per cent.
Gender differences stable
One out of six graduates in tertiary education was a woman. Among graduates from state university colleges women dominated with a representation of 67 per cent. Among university graduates there was an even distribution of men and women.
Men and women were equally represented among graduates in commercial and business subjects and social sciences and law in 2003/2004. In some fields of study the gender differences was the same as it was ten years ago. Women dominated in studies of health welfare and sports , education and teacher training and arts and aesthetic subjects . The highest proportion of men was in the in natural sciences , trade and industrial subjects and agricultural subjects .
