Significant increase in completed masters

The increase in completed tertiary degrees by students in Norway in 2006/07 was accomplished at universities rather than at university colleges. While the number of awarded master’s degrees has risen, the level of undergraduate degrees has been stable

Completed degrees at universities and colleges

Over time, we’ve seen two pronounced increases, one in the early nineties and a significant increase in the number of completed master’s degrees since 2003. One reason was the introduction of the Quality Reform in all tertiary institutions in Norway. The previous six years tertiary postgraduate degree became a five year master’s degree. However, last year’s 24 per cent increase was the largest since 1990.

More tertiary degrees completed

During the academic year 2006/07 the total number of tertiary degrees awarded in Norwegian universities and colleges increased by 1 800 compared with the previous year. The reason for the increase was a larger number of completed university degrees, while the number of completed degrees in university colleges was stable. The universities experienced an increase of 17 per cent, while there was a slight decrease in number of graduates at the specialised university institutions and state university colleges. Almost 300 fewer degrees were completed in these institutions. Tertiary degrees longer than four years account for most of last year’s increase. Of a total increase of 1 800 completed tertiary degrees, 1 400 were master level degrees.
