Increase in number of students
Preliminary figures show an increase in the number of students at Norwegian universities and colleges from about 208 200 in 2007 to 214 400 in 2008, an increase of 3 per cent.
The number of female students has increased the most from 2007 to 2008. Women’s gain in enrolment has been around 4 200, compared with roughly 2 000 among men. The largest increase is found in university colleges. Public university colleges account for approximately 50 per cent of the total growth in student registrations. Among private university colleges, the Norwegian School of Management (BI) alone represents more than 20 per cent of the total growth in total enrolments. BI obtained status as specialized university as of the 1st of June 2008.
More students aged 19 and 20
Enrolments in tertiary education among 19 and 20-year-olds have risen substantially. The student populations aged 19 and 20 have climbed 7.0 and 7.4 per cent respectively. A contributing ground for this increase could be of demographic art. The number of people aged 19 and 20 increased by 5 500 - from 114 000 in 2007 to 119 500 in 2008.
Female students in all age groups vastly outnumber men in Norwegian universities and colleges. The proportions of women within the 19-24 and 25-29 age groups account for approximately 35 and 19 per cent of female populations in these groups in 2008. Corresponding proportions for male students within the same age groups have been 23 and 12 per cent.
