Increased activity abroad

Norwegian enterprises controlled 3 228 enterprises abroad at the end of 2011. Compared with 2010, there was an increase in both turnover and employment.

In total, Norwegian-controlled affiliates abroad amounted to 3 228 at the end of 2011, with an aggregate employment of 251 000 and a turnover of NOK 1 046 billion.

The survey shows that 2 312, or 72 per cent, of the Norwegian-controlled enterprises abroad were located in European countries. Europe’s share of turnover and employment was a little less, with 59 per cent and 60 per cent respectively. Sweden was the single most predominant country, hosting 700 Norwegian enterprises, with an annual turnover of NOK 175 billion and 43 000 employees.

Manufacturing was the most important industry with a total of 930 Norwegian-controlled enterprises, aggregate turnover of NOK 442 billion and 109 000 employees.

The increase in turnover was NOK 167 billion and employment increased by nearly 12 000 persons. The largest increase in turnover was within the sectors of manufacturing and mining and quarrying.
