Manufacturing the most important industry
Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the distribution of turnover and employment respectively. The tables show that manufacturing is the most important industry, with over 40 per cent of the total in both turnover and employment. Mining and quarrying (incl. the oil industry) is the second most important industry measured in turnover, followed by the wholesale and retail trade industry, with 19 and 12 per cent respectively. Measured in employment, information and communication and transportation and storage are the next most important industries for Norwegian-controlled enterprises abroad, with 15 and 9 per cent respectively.
Greatest increase for Brazil in the manufacturing industry
Figures 4 and 5 show the development in turnover and employment in the manufacturing industry for selected countries. Of the selected countries, Brazil has the highest growth in turnover, with NOK 20 billion in 2013 to NOK 35 billion in 2014, surpassing Great Britain in total turnover. Brazil is also the country with the highest growth in employed persons, and overtook Germany to become the third largest employer. The increase in Brazil is due to a rise in the number of reported enterprises, and a higher reported turnover and number of persons employed in 2014 than 2013 in established enterprises. Figure 4 shows Denmark as the country with the highest turnover in 2014, but which nevertheless had a decrease compared to 2013. Figure 5 shows the USA and Sweden as the countries with the most employed persons.
