Norwegian-controlled enterprises controlled 2 989 enterprises abroad at the end of 2010, with an aggregate employment of 234 000 and a turnover of NOK 740 billion.

The survey shows that 1 978, or 66 per cent, of the Norwegian-controlled enterprises abroad were located in EU countries, with an annual turnover of NOK 449 billion and 135 000 employees. Sweden was the single most predominant country, hosting 629 Norwegian enterprises with an annual turnover of NOK 137 billion and 41 000 employees.

Manufacturing was the most important industry with a total of 932 Norwegian-controlled enterprises, aggregate turnover of NOK 339 billion and 104 000 employees.

The statistics describe the activity of foreign-controlled enterprises in a country. An enterprise is deemed as Norwegian-controlled when a Norwegian institutional unit controls, directly or indirectly, more than half of the shares or voting power. The statistics are compiled according to the ultimate controlling institutional unit (UCI) concept. In a chain of control, UCI is defined as an institutional unit that is not controlled by another institutional unit.

The statistics cover a sample of the Norwegian-controlled enterprises abroad. Only economically active enterprises are included in the population. The statistics are based on a cut-off sampling survey, and cover the largest Norwegian-controlled enterprises abroad in addition to a sample of smaller enterprises. The size of the sampling survey has increased since the first year (2008), but all of the largest enterprises have been included throughout.
