Ocean transport struck by the credit crunch

Total exports within ocean transport amounted to NOK 89.9 billion in 2008. Imports totalled NOK 50.6 billion. Thus, ocean transport’s addition to Norway’s balance of services was NOK 39.3 billion in 2008.

Water transport of goods constituted 60.9 per cent of the total exports within ocean transport and amounted to NOK 54.8 billion. Rental of manned vessels made up 30.0 per cent and amounted to NOK 27.0 billion.

Enterprises within ocean transport imported services related to water transport worth NOK 17.2 billion in 2008. A large component here was voyage dependent costs, which made up 34.0 per cent of the total imports within ocean transport. Rental of manned vessels represents another big import item, with 32.1 per cent of the import in 2008

EU the biggest trade partner

Exports to non-Nordic countries in the EU amounted to NOK 47.4 billion in 2008. The EU is by far Norway’s largest trading partner, with 52.7 per cent of the total exports. The Nordic countries and Asia accounts for another 12.7 and 12.6 per cent respectively.

The figures are included in the Balance of Payments . The data are collected through the survey for Structural Business Statistics on Transport and Storage and reflect the external trade in services from the Operating Survey for Water Transport .
