Significant fall in exports

Norwegian enterprises engaged in ocean transport earned NOK 76.6 billion from foreign counterparts in 2009, a 15 per cent drop from 2008.

Water transport of goods represents more than half of export revenue earned by enterprises in the industry division of water transport. At NOK 48.3 billion in 2009 revenues are down NOK 6.4 billion from 2008 making for a drop of 12 per cent.

Less foreign time charter

Imports in the form of rented manned vessels fell by more than 30 per cent from 2008 to 2009. Norwegian enterprises spent NOK 11.3 billion on this in 2009 compared to NOK 16.2 billion in 2008. Along with a reduction in rented vessels come reduced costs of storage and stevedore services. Here imports fell from NOK 3.7 billion in 2008 to NOK 2.6 in 2009, a fall of 29 per cent.

Balance of services down

With NOK 76.7 billion in exports and NOK 43.3 billion in imports, ocean transport’s addition to Norway’s balance of services was at NOK 33.2 billion in 2009.

In 2009 crew costs are excluded from imports. More on this in About the Statistics .

Other relevant statistics

The figures are included in the Balance of Payments . The data are collected through the survey for Structural Business Statistics on Transport and Storage and reflect the external trade in services from the Operating Survey for Water Transport .
