Retail sales up 0.3 per cent

The seasonally adjusted volume index of retail sale rose by 0.3 per cent from July to August 2001. Compared with August 2000 the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 0.1 per cent.

The volume index of retail sale increased by 0.2 per cent in August 2001 compared with August 2000. The value index of retail sales rose by 2.8 per cent the same period. Retail sales figures exclude motor vehicles and petrol.

The volume index of retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores increased by 5.8 per cent in August 2001 compared with August 2000. Retail sale in non-specialized stores, which mainly include grocery stores, rose by 3.0 per in the same period. The volume index of pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles increased by 3.8 per cent in August this year compared with August last year. The volume index of retail sale of new goods in specialized stores decreased by 0.1 per cent. This sector includes shoes, electrical goods, furniture and building materials.

Preliminary results

These preliminary results are based on a sample of 9 000 responds. Before the publication of the final results of the retail sales index for September 2000, we expect to receive another 500 responds. The final results, to be published October 9, may therefore be adjusted.
