Retail sales down in September

The seasonally adjusted volume index of retail sales decreased 0.3 per cent in September 2001 compared with August 2001. The volume index not adjusted decreased 2.2 per cent in September 2001 compared with September 2000.

The value index of retail sales decreased 0.8 per cent in September 2001 compared with September 2000. September 2001 includes one trading day less than September 2000. The index excludes sales of motorized vehicles and petrol.

Preliminary results

These preliminary results are based on a sample of 9 050 responds. Before the publication of the final results of the retail sales index for September 2001, we expect to receive another 550 responds. The final results, to be published November 8, may therefore be adjusted.
