Small changes in retail sales

The seasonally adjusted volume index of retail sales rose by 0.1 per cent in April compared with March this year. Compared with April 2001 the seasonally adjusted volume index rose by 3.9 per cent.

The seasonally adjusted volume index takes the timing of Easter into account. There is nevertheless considerable uncertainty in the model we use to correct for Easter. The seasonally adjusted index for March and April is therefore more uncertain than the index for the other months.

The volume index of retail sales not seasonally adjusted increased by 8.0 per cent in April 2002 compared with April 2001. During the same period the value index rose by 11.2 per cent. Retail sale is exclusive sales of motor vehicles and petrol.

Preliminary results

These preliminary results are based on a sample of 8 920 responds. Before the publication of the final results of the retail sales index for April 2002, we expect to receive another 1 200 responds. The final results, to be published 7t h of June 2002, may therefore be adjusted.
