The cross border trade statistics are based on a sample of Norwegian persons aged 16-79. The figures are therefore uncertain by about half a billion NOK. If the total cross border trade is NOK 2 billion in a given quarter, it is 95 per cent certain that the true value is within the interval NOK 1.5 to 2.5 billion. Comparing two quarterly figures that are both uncertain entails an even greater uncertainty. Statistics Norway is therefore cautious when describing the development of cross border trade based on quarterly figures.
Figures for a year or four-quarter period have an uncertainty measured in absolute figures (NOK) twice the uncertainty of the quarterly figures. As a percentage, the uncertainty of the annual figure is only half of the uncertainty of the quarterly figures.
