Wholesale and retail trade rose by NOK 100 billion

The turnover of local kind-of-activity units in the wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and household goods, rose by NOK 99.5 billion, or 10.8 per cent from 2003 to 2004.

The turnover amounted to NOK 1 021 billion in 2004. The total number of persons employed in 2004 was 351 761 people, and the total number of local kind-activity units was 67 619. The compensation of employees amounted to NOK 95.5 billion in 2004 and the investments amounted to NOK 9.6 billion. The turnover in the structure statistics is excluding VAT.

1.9 per cent of the local KAUs contributed to 40 per cent of the turnover

In 2004 the 1 274 local KAUs with 30 or more people employed, or 1.9 per cent of the total population, contributed to 40.3 per cent, or NOK 411.3 billion, of the total turnover in the wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and household goods. The 34 944 local KAUs, or 51.7 per cent of the total population, with two or fewer persons employed contributed to 7.3 per cent, or NOK 74.1 billion, of the total turnover.

269 billion in retail trade

The local kind-of-activity units in the retail trade, exclusive motor vehicles and motorcycles, had a turnover of NOK 268.6 billion in 2004, an increase of NOK 15.3 billion or 6.1 per cent from 2003.

The employment increased by 3 572 people, and the local kind-of-activity units rose by 91. The change compared with 2003 was 1.9 and 0.2 per cent respectively. The employment was 189 486 persons, while the number of local kind-of-activity units was 37 023.

Large growth for motor vehicles and petrol

The local kind-of-activity units within sale and maintenance of motor vehicles and automotive fuel had an increase in turnover of 14.1 per cent from 2003 to 2004. The turnover amounted to NOK 167.3 billion in 2004. The employment was 56 151 persons, while the number of enterprises was 10 492. The change compared with 2003 was 1.5 and 0.4 per cent respectively. The compensation of employees amounted to NOK 16.1 billion in 2004, and the investments amounted to NOK 1.5 billion in 2004.

585 billion in agency and wholesale trade

The local kind-of-activity units in the agency and wholesale trade, exclusive motor vehicles and motorcycles, had a turnover of NOK 585.4 billion in 2004, an increase of 12.2 per cent from 2003. The employment rose by 602 people, while the local kind-of-activity units declined by 207. The employment was 106 124 persons, while the number of local kind-of-activity units was 20 104. The compensation of employees and investments amounted to NOK 43.3 and 3.3 billion respectively.

Enterprise statistics

The 57 166 enterprises in the wholesale and retail trade generated a turnover of NOK 981.9 billion in 2004. The employment was 348 830 people. The structure statistics are published both at enterprise and local kind-of-activity units level. Statistics Norway has access to a more detailed accounting information at the enterprise level. The turnover at the local kind-of-activity units level is somewhat higher than the turnover at the enterprise level, because some local kind-of-activity units in the wholesale and retail trade belong to enterprises, which are not part of the wholesale and retail trade.
