More enterprises are controlled from abroad

The number of foreign-controlled enterprises in Norway increased by 217 units from 2011 to 2012. The employment has passed 300 000 people, and total turnover amounted to more than NOK 1 300 billion.

The data for 2012 show that there were 6 251 enterprises under foreign control in Norway. This is 217 more than the year before. About 80 per cent of these enterprises were controlled from countries in the EU, and Sweden was the largest ownership country with 1 813 units. Denmark was the second largest with 809, followed by Great Britain with 647. Measured in turnover, the USA was the most important ownership country with a share of 23 per cent. Second most important was Sweden with 14 per cent, followed by the Netherlands with 10 per cent.

The foreign-controlled enterprises employed about 306 000 people and had a total turnover of approximately NOK 1 313 billion. This amounts to 20 per cent of the employment and 25 per cent of the turnover within the Norwegian business sector as a whole.

Somewhat stronger Nordic ownership

2 913 Norwegian enterprises were controlled from other Nordic countries . This is 95 more units than in 2011, and Sweden and Denmark accounted for almost all the increase. Of the countries outside the Nordic region it was Luxembourg which had the highest growth with 46 enterprises.

Noticeable growth in value added

Total value added for the foreign-controlled enterprises was about NOK 461 billion in 2012. This is 13 per cent more than in 2011. The corresponding figure for the Norwegian business sector as a whole was 7 per cent. Foreign controlled enterprises are strongly represented within the extraction of crude oil and natural gas, and positive development within this industry was the main reason why it went somewhat better for these companies. In all, foreign-controlled enterprises contributed to more than a quarter of total value added within the Norwegian business sector as a whole.

Enterprises controlled from the USA contribute most to the value added

Measured in value added, the USA was the largest ownership country with a share of 30 per cent, while enterprises controlled from France accounted for 14 per cent. Enterprises controlled from Sweden and the Netherlands accounted for 10 per cent each.
