The data for 2013 shows that 6 400 Norwegian enterprises are subject to foreign control. About 80 per cent of these enterprises are controlled from countries within the EU, and Sweden is the largest ownership country with 2 042 units. Denmark is the second largest ownership country with 908 units, while Great Britain is the third largest ownership country with 614 units. However, measured in turnover, the USA is the most important ownership country with a share of 25 per cent. Second most important is Sweden, with a share of 16 per cent, followed by Great Britain with a share of 9 per cent.

Foreign-controlled enterprises employ about 310 000 people, and total turnover amounts to approximately NOK 1 400 billion. This is 20 per cent of the employment and 27 per cent of the turnover within the Norwegian business sector as a whole.

Greater Nordic dominance

A total of 3 235 Norwegian enterprises are controlled from other Nordic countries. This is 322 more units than in 2012 and about 50 per cent of the foreign-controlled enterprises. Sweden and Denmark account for the whole increase, while Finland and Iceland experienced minor changes. Luxembourg and the Baltic states have the strongest growth among the EU countries outside the Nordic region.

A small decline in value added

Total value added for the foreign-controlled enterprises amounts to about NOK 451 billion. This is 2 per cent less than in 2012. The corresponding figure for the Norwegian business sector as a whole, however, is more or less unchanged. Overall, foreign-controlled enterprises generated 26 per cent of the total value added within the Norwegian business sector as a whole.

Measured in value added, the USA is the largest ownership country, with a share of 30 per cent. Much of this is generated by enterprises within the extraction of crude oil and natural gas. Sweden accounts for 13 per cent of the value added, while France accounts for 12 per cent.
