Survey on visitation rights, 1996:

Three of four children in split families have frequent contact with both parents


Among children who live with only one of their parents, 93 per cent have been with the other parent after the parents parted or since their birth. Nearly 75 per cent have been together within the past 30 days. One out of 10 couples has an agreement providing more than customary visitation rights. Eight per cent of children live with their father. In 30 per cent of the cases, parents have joint custody, according to a survey on visitation rights carried out in January and February this year.

A total of 86 per cent of children have been with the other parent in the last 12 months, and 73 per cent have been with him or her in the last 30 days. Visitation varies by age. Among children in the age group 0-4, 79 per cent have been with the other parent in the last 30 days, while the percentage for children aged 15 to 17 was 65 percent.

8 per cent live with dad

Eight per cent of children live with their father, while 92 per cent live with their mother. The percentage of children living with their father increases with age. Among those in the age group 0-4 two percent live with their father. In the age group 5-9 it is six per cent, among 10-14 year olds it is 12 per cent and among 15-17 year olds 15 per cent live with their father.
