Fewer places in psychiatric care


The number of 24-hour places in adult psychiatric care facilities dropped by about six per cent from 1993 to 1994. In child and youth psychiatry the number of beds was reduced by nearly eight per cent. Since 1980 there has been a 44 per cent reduction in the number of places.

At the end of 1994 there were 6,827 24-hour places in psychiatric care facilities. Of these, 6,537 places were for the treatment of adults and 290 for the treatment of children and young people. In adult psychiatric care there were 3,051 places in hospitals, while 3,486 were in nursing homes, post-treatment facilities, residence and treatment centres, etc.
