Increase among men, decrease among women

Registered unemployment among first generation immigrants increased from 7.8 percent to 8.1 per cent from August 1999 to August this year. By comparison. The unemployment rate for the entire population was stable at 2.9 per cent - all calculated as a fraction of the labour force. The increase among immigrants has only occurred among men.

The immigrants from Africa had still the highest registered unemployment rate, with 15.2 per cent at the end of August followed by the immigrants from Asia with an unemployment rate of 11.3 per cent .

Among immigrants from Eastern Europe there has been a decrease from 11.4 per cent to 11.0 per cent during this period. Among the other groups of immigrants there has been a slight increase

The registered unemployment rate for male immigrants was 8.7 per cent in August this year, while the unemployment rate for female immigrants was 7.5 per cent. For the whole country these figures were 2.9 per cent for both men and woman.

The increase in unemployment among immigrants has only occurred among men, with 0.7 percentage points. Among women there has been a slight decrease of 0.1 per cent points.

The number of persons covered by ordinary labour market schemes (job programmes) showed an increase from August 1999 to August 2000 both at the national level and among immigrants with 0.2 and 0.7 percentage points respectively . At the end of August this year, 3 163 immigrants were enrolled in public sector job creation programmes. They accounted for 33.0 per cent of all persons covered by such schemes. Immigrants from Africa had the highest percentage of participants in such labour market schemes with 2.5 per cent.
