Monthly earnings up 4 per cent

Average monthly earnings for all employees, excluding overtime pay, were NOK 36 700 as per 1 October 2010. This was a year-on-year increase of NOK 1 400 or 4 per cent.

Full-time employees had average monthly earnings of NOK 38 100, while the corresponding earnings for part-time employees were NOK 30 600. This was a year-on-year increase of 4.1 and 4.4 per cent respectively. In order to make the part-time and full-time earnings comparable, the earnings of part-time employees are converted to earnings corresponding to full-time employees.

Small changes in the wage gender gap

Women, including both part-time and full-time employees, had average monthly earnings of NOK 33 400, while the corresponding earnings for men were NOK 39 300. This was a year-on-year increase of 4.4 per cent for women and 4 per cent for men. Women’s earnings as a proportion of men’s earnings increased from 84.7 per cent in 2009 to 85 per cent in 2010.

Annual earnings up 3.6 per cent1

The average annual earnings, where annual earnings for all industries are aggregated, amounted to1NOK 435 200 in 2010. This was an increase of1NOK 15 200 or 3.6 per cent1 from 2009.

The private sector

Annual earnings in the private sector vary from NOK 688 300 in the oil and gas extraction industry to NOK 313 400 in the hotels and restaurants sector. The annual increase in these sectors was 1.9 per cent and 3.8 per cent respectively. Average annual earnings for employees in manufacturing were NOK 434 000. This was an increase of NOK 12 300 or 2.9 per cent from 2009.

The public sector

Average annual earnings for employees in the central government, excluding employees in health enterprises, rose by 4.3 per cent, to NOK 450 100. For employees in health enterprises, annual earnings rose by 1.6 per cent, to NOK 445 700.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises with a total of 1 577 242 employees in the third quarter of 2010. The sample covers all industries except for agriculture, hunting and forestry. The data for these statistics have not been collected separately, but through previously published statistics for the individual industries. According to figures from Norwegian Central Register of Enterprises and Establishments for the third quarter of 2010, the statistics cover about 2 255 000 employees.
