Monthly earnings up NOK 1 800 in ICT

The average monthly earnings for full-time employees in the ICT sector were NOK 33 700 per 3rd quarter 2002. This was an increase of NOK 1 800 or 5.6 per cent from the same period in 2001.

From 1999 to 2002 average monthly earnings increased by about NOK 5 700 or 20 per cent. The largest growth was from 2000 to 2001 with NOK 2 400 or 8.3 per cent.

ICT industries

The ICT sector concists of ICT-related industries from four sections, namely manufacturing, wholesale, transport (telecommunications) and business activitites (consultancy services). Consultancy services holds about 45 per cent of all full-time employees in the ICT sector. They have the highest monthly earnings on the average, with NOK 37 200 per 3rd quarter 2002. This was an increase of NOK 4 800 or almost 15 per cent from 1999.

Wages increased the most within telecommunications

Telecommunications experienced the largest growth in wages through the period 1999-2002. Average monthly earnings went up from NOK 27 200 to NOK 34 000, an increase of NOK 6 800 or close to 25 per cent. The average monthly earnings in ICT manufacturing increased from NOK 27 000 in 1999 to NOK 33 000 in 2002. This was an increase of NOK 6 000 or 22 per cent. By comparison, the average monthly earnings in ICT wholesale increased by NOK 4 100 or 15 per cent, from NOK 27 000 to

31 100.

Higher education

Almost one half of all full-time employees in the ICT sector have completed higher education. The majority has degrees from studies lasting 4 years or less. On average, their monthly earnings were NOK 37 800 per 3rd quarter 2002. This equalled an increase of NOK 6 400 or 20 per cent from the same period 1999. Employees with education lasting longer than 4 years increased their monthly earnings from NOK 36 600 to 44 200 in the same period, which was up NOK 7 700 or 21 per cent.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with altogether 39 653 full-time employees per 3rd quarter 2002. According to preliminary figures from the structural statistics for manufacturing, wholesale, telecommunications and consultancy services a total of 92 136 persons were employed in the ICT sector in 2001.

The data for the ICT-statistics are not collected separately. The statistics are based on already existing data and statistics for the sections mentioned above.
