Monthly earnings up NOK 1 200

Full-time central government employees had average monthly earnings of NOK 23 800 at 1 October 2000. This was NOK 1 200 more than at the same time the year before, or an increase of 5.3 per cent. Wage growth varies from 4.4. per cent for employees of government enterprises to 6.5 per cent for health service workers.

Full-time health service workers had average monthly earnings of NOK 25 600 at 1 October 2000. This worked out to an increase of almost NOK 1 600 from the same time the year before. Here, chief physicians and ward physicians had monthly earnings of NOK 40 500 and NOK 33 400 respectively. Both of these groups have seen a slight decline in monthly earnings, while salaries according toscale have increased by 4.4 and 4.5 per cent respectively. In comparison, specialized nurses and professional nurses had monthly earnings of NOK 28 900 and NOK 23 900 respectively. Compared with the same time the year before their earnings have increased NOK 4 000 or 16.2 per cent and NOK 3 200 or 15.7 per cent respectively.

Monthly earnings of employees of public enterprises were somewhat lower at NOK 21 600, while the increase was just over NOK 900. Corresponding monthly earnings of full-time employees of ministries and other central administration departments were NOK 26 100 and NOK 25 700 respectively. This corresponded to an increase from the year before of NOK 1 500 or 6 per cent in the ministries, and NOK 1 300 or 5.5 per cent in other central administration departments.

Other civil services

Around a third of all full-time central government employees are employed in other civil services. Here, average monthly earnings of all full-time employees was just over NOK 23 300, an increase of about NOK 1 000 or 4.7 per cent from the year before. In the police force and rural police service average monthly earnings increased by NOK 1 100 or 4.9 per cent. Here, sergeants had monthly earnings of NOK 23 900, an increase of just over NOK 1 400 or 6.3 per cent. In comparison, employees with executive work positions had monthly earnings of NOK 20 200, an increase of NOK 600 or 3.1 per cent. District police superintendents had monthly earnings of just about NOK 29 000, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 4.1 per cent.

In the labour market administration, monthly earnings increased by just about NOK 900 or 4.3 per cent from the same time the year before. Heads of employment offices had average monthly earnings of about NOK 26 000, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 4.5 per cent. In comparison, employees with executive work positions had monthly earnings of just about NOK 21 000, an increase of about NOK 900 or 4.2 per cent.

Universities and equivalent institutions

Among full-time employees of universities and equivalent institutions, average monthly earnings were NOK 25 500, an increase of just over NOK 1 300 or 5.5 per cent. At universities, professors had average monthly earnings of about NOK 35 500, an increase of NOK 1 600 or 4.8 per cent. In comparison, assistant professors, first grade and assistant professors had monthly earnings of NOK 29 400 and NOK 27 600 respectively. This was equivalent to an increase of NOK 1 800 or 6.7 per cent and NOK 1 700 or 6.4 per cent respectively. Research offisers had average monthly earnings of about NOK 29 000, an increase of NOK 1 500 or 5.4 per cent from the same time the year before.

About the statistical basis

The central government wage settlement in the spring of 2000 resulted from 1 May in an annual increase of NOK 5 000 for each scale grade. A further 2.2 per cent was set aside from 15 July 2000 in the central wage adjustment negotiations. Effective 1 September 2000, 0.85 per cent was set aside for local negotiations.
