Issues of bonds continue to increase

Issues of bonds increased by 63 per cent in the third quarter 2002 compared with the corresponding period in 2001. Mortgage companies increased the most by NOK 11,5 billion, or 286,6 per cent.

During 2002 the total amount of bond issues in Norway was NOK 90.6 billion, an increase of NOK 35 billion, or 63 per cent from September last year. The Central government issued NOK 14 billion worth of bonds during this year, an increase of 35 per cent compared with September 2001. The Central government bond issues represent 15.4 per cent of the total amount of issues. Commercial banks issued NOK 19.1 billion. Savings banks issued NOK 21.2 billion worth of bonds. Mortgage companies had the strongest increase in the 3.quarter of NOK 11.5 billion or 286.6 per cent.

Domestic bond debt at 30 September 2002 was NOK 470.8 billion. This is an increase in outstanding debt of NOK 52.9 billion, or 12.65 per cent compared with 2001. The Central government debt by NOK 141.8 billion represents 30.1 per cent of the total outstanding debt.

Issues of commercial papers increased by 3.03 per cent

Issues of commercial papers increased by NOK 7.7 billion or 3.03 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year. So far in 2002 the total amount of commercial paper issues in Norway was NOK 262.6 billion. The issues of commercial papers at the same time last year were amounted to NOK 254.9 billion. Domestic debt at the end of September 2002 was NOK 139.8 billion compared with NOK 138.3 billion in the corresponding period in 2001. Savings banks issued NOK 60.8 billion worth of bonds, 23.2 per cent of the total amount of commercial paper issues. The Central government issues came to NOK 52.5 billion, while commercial banks issued NOK 51.6 billion worth of commercial papers.

Issues abroad in NOK and foreign currency

Statistics on issues of bonds and commercial papers offered abroad in NOK and foreign currency are obtained from the Norwegian Central Bank. From the first quarter 2001 special ECP and USCP programmes are included. From the third quarter 2002 data for 2001 and 2002 have been revised, due to extensive marked research carried out by the Central Bank of Norway.

The statistics show that issues during 2002 amounted to NOK 218.6 billion. Mortgage companies are the largest borrowers in the foreign market, with NOK 156.4 billion.
