Increase in issues of debt securities

During the second half of 2007, a moderate increase in issues of debt securities was registered in Norway due to a sharp increase in issues of commercial papers, combined with a decline in issues of bonds. However, the major part of Norwegian entities’ issues still takes place abroad.

In December 2007, 50 bond issues valued at NOK 11.1 billion and 114 commercial papers valued at NOK 39.3 billion were registered in Norway. Norwegian entities issued 188 debt securities valued at NOK 48.9 billion abroad.

During the second half of 2007, 874 issues of debt securities valued at NOK 250.6 billion were registered in Norway. Compared with the second half of 2006, the number and amount of issues rose by 4.7 per cent and 5.7 per cent respectively. The major part of the number of issues (529) as well as the amount (NOK 145.1 billion) referred to issues of commercial papers.

Broken down by group of issuers, commercial and savings banks accounted for the largest number (396) and amount (NOK 92.5 billion) of debt security issues in the second half of 2007. The number of issues by central government was low (14), but these issues still account for the second largest amount (NOK 46.3 billion). There has been an increase in the ‘rest of the world’s’ share in debt securities in Norway. In the second half of 2007, this group’s share of debt securities was 12 per cent, compared with 7 per cent in the second half of 2006.

Issues of bonds and commercial papers, number and nominalvalue

The major part of Norwegian entities’ issues is still made outside Norway. During the second half of 2007, Norwegian entities issued 1 307 commercial papers valued at NOK 461.7 billion abroad. This represents an increase in the number and amount of issues of 21 per cent and 19 per cent respectively compared to the second half of 2006. Commercial and savings banks as well as ‘other financial corporations’ accounted for the major part of these issues.

In 2007, 1 804 issues of commercial papers valued at NOK 481.5 billion were registered in Norway. Outstanding bond and short-term securities at the end of December 2007 amounted to NOK 775.4 billion and NOK 141.3 billion respectively. Norwegian entities have issued 2 479 debt securities valued at NOK 804.7 billion abroad.
