Increase in issues of debt securities

Compared with the first half of 2007, Norwegian entities issued a high volume of debt securities during the first half of 2008, particularly outside Norway. The volume of Norwegian entities’ issues of debt securities abroad was twice the volume of issues in Norway.

During the first half of 2008, issues of 1 292 bonds and commercial papers made by Norwegian entities abroad was registered, valued at NOK 492.8 billion. The number and amount of issues rose by 10 per cent and 44 per cent respectively, compared with the first half of 2007. The major part of these issues refers to loans taken up by commercial and savings banks and other financial corporations.

In Norway, 954 issues of debt securities valued at NOK 245.5 billion were registered during the first half of 2008. Compared with the first half of 2007, the number and amount of issues rose by 2.6 per cent and 6.3 per cent respectively. The share of the number of issues that referred to issues of commercial papers was unchanged at 52 per cent. On the other hand, 51 per cent of the amount issued referred to bonds, compared to 52 per cent in the first half of 2007.

Issues of bonds and commercial papers, number and nominal value

By groups of issuers, the largest number (424) and amount (NOK 82.3 billion) of debt security issues in the first half of 2008 referred to loans taken up by commercial and savings banks. The number of issues made by the central government was modest (10), but the central government nevertheless issued the second largest amount (NOK 46.7 billion). The rest of the world is a considerable issuing sector. This sector’s part of the amount issued was 11 per cent.

The domestic bond and commercial paper debt at the end of first half of 2008 amounted to NOK 971.2 billion, an increase of more than 16 per cent compared with the end of first half of 2007.
