Fewer marriages
A total of 23 600 couples got married in 2010; a decrease of 1 000 compared to 2009. A total of 10 300 marriages were dissolved by divorce, and 11 700 couples were separated in 2010. The number of divorces has been at the same level for the last four years.
Even though the number of marriages has decreased in the two last years, the figure is still high. Except for the average of the last five years, it is the highest number since the average of 1976-1980. The number of divorces has been at the same level for the last four years, while the number of separations has decreased somewhat since 2009.
A total of 264 couples of the same sex were married in 2010: 97 between two males and 167 between two females. That is somewhat fewer than in 2009, which was the first year of the new Marriage Act. Only 68 couples, compared with 6531 couples in 2009, changed their partnerships to marriages during the second year of the new Marriage Act.
In 2010, 29 couples of the same sex were separated and 4 couples of the same sex were divorced. Sixty partnerships experienced separation and 83 partnerships were dissolved by divorce in 2010.
