Stable marriage and divorce numbers
A total of 24 6001 couples were married in 2009, whereas 10 200 marriages were dissolved by divorce and 11 900 couples were separated. This is about the same as in 2008.
Compared to 2008, the number of contracted marriages decreased by around 5001, but except from the years 2000 and 2008 it is the highest number since the mid-1970s. The number of divorces was at the same level as in 2008, whereas the number of separations was slightly higher.
The new Marriage ActFrom 1 January 2009 the Marriage Act was changed in such a way that two persons of the same sex can be married. Simultaneously, one no longer can contract partnership. Persons already in a partnership can change their partnership to a marriage. |
During the first year of the new Marriage Act, 283 couples of the same sex were married. 63 per cent of these were women. 653 partnerships were changed to marriage during 2009. This was 32 per cent of the existing partnerships at the beginning of 2009.
Last year 73 partnerships were dissolved by divorce and 82 partnerships experienced separation.
