The number of new dwellings given building starts has increased since May, according to the long-term trend. This follows a period of decline and then flattening.
Also decrease for non-residential buildings
Seasonally-adjusted figures show that building start permits, measured by utility floor space, for non-residential buildings decreased by 11 per cent from October to November 2013. Figures also show a 12 per cent decrease from September to October.
The long-term trend shows a slight decrease since July in utility floor space for non-residential buildings, after a period of decline.
Small decrease from 2012 to 2013
A total of 27 700 new dwellings were given building start permits in the period January–November 2013. This is a decrease of 0.6 per cent compared with the eleven first months of 2012.
Building start permits were given for almost 8.7 million square metres of utility floor space in January–November. This is 2.5 per cent less than in the same period in 2012.
Buildings in the industrial sector show an 8 per cent decrease compared with the period January–November 2012. Holiday properties (cottages), private garages and other non-industrial activity saw a corresponding decrease of 0.5 per cent.
Registered building permissionsOpen and readClose
Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
