Increased petroleum production
The total petroleum production on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in 2008 was 242.1 million Sm3 oil equivalents (oe). Compared to 2007, this is an increase by 1.7 per cent. Whereas the production of gas has increased, the production of oil has fallen.
The production of natural gas continues to increase. In 2008, the total gas production ended up at 99 million Sm3 oe, an increase by 10.7 per cent or 9.5 million Sm3 compared with 2007. Natural gas production made up 41 per cent of the total petroleum production in 2008. Three new fields started gas production previous year: Volve, Alvheim and Vilje. 94.6 per cent of the gas produced in Norway is exported and the Norwegian gas cover 16 per cent of the European gas consumption.
Oil production
The total production of oil, including NGL and condensate, amounted to 142.9 million Sm3 oe in 2008, a decrease by 3.8 per cent or 5.5 million Sm3 oe. The last time the oil production was this low was in 1993. There are 53 fields that produce oil. The largest is Ekofisk that started its production in 1971, in 2008 it produced 12 million Sm3 oe.
