Troubled manufacturing industry

Sales of goods manufactured in Norway went down in 2003 compared with 2002. The largest decline took place in shipbuilding and oil platform building. The industry group manufacturing of machinery and other equipment also experienced a considerable decline. The industry groups oil refinery and production of basic chemicals, on the other hand, experienced a substantial growth following two years of decline. This was also the case for basic metals production.

The commodity statistics shows a 2 per cent decrease in sales of manufactured goods in the manufacturing, mining and quarrying industries, from NOK 383 billion to NOK 376 billion. This is slightly lower than the decrease in the manufacturing industry according to preliminary national accounts figures (down 3 per cent).

Commodity figures for enterprises in manufacturing, mining and quarrying. 2002-2003

The largest decline took place within shipbuilding and oil platform building. This industry saw sales figures fall by 10 per cent, from NOK 51 billion to NOK 46 billion. The shipbuilding and oil platform building industry is classified under industry group 35, manufacture of other transport equipment. The industry group manufacturing of machinery and other equipment experienced a 7 per cent decline, from NOK 75 billion to NOK 70 billion. All the industrial activities within this industry experienced a decrease in sold goods.

The food industry, pulp and paper industry and publishing and printing industry also saw sales figures drop. A particularly large decrease within the production of fish and fish products contributed to the decline in the food industry.

Increase in some industries

The oil refinery and basic chemicals industries experienced an increase in sales of manufactured goods by 8 per cent, from NOK 51 billion to NOK 55 billion. For the basic metals industry the increase was 7 per cent, from NOK 36 billion to NOK 38 billion. The mining and quarrying industry and rubber and plastic industry also saw sales figures rise.

The commodity statistics is an annual survey and is based on information from the 2 627 largest enterprises classified under manufacturing, mining and quarrying. These enterprises contributed to almost 90 per cent of the total production in these sectors in 2003.
