More than 2.6 billion in public dental health care
The development of dental health care follows the same pattern as the rest of the health care sector: the cost levels are higher. Furthermore, the number of dentists with a foreign background has increased over the past five years. The dental health care status among 12 and 18-year-olds shows the same amount of caries as in 2008.
The gross expenditure in public dental health care continues to increase. From 2008 to 2009, the gross expenditure increased by 5.6 per cent. The counties used almost NOK 540 per person to provide public dental health care. This is NOK 23 more than the year before. The total expenditure for the 19 counties was almost NOK 2.6 billion, which is an increase of NOK 140 million from 2008.
More foreign dentists
The number of dentists with a foreign background has increased by almost 35 per cent in the period 2005-2009. In 2009 there were 1 036 dentists with a foreign background working in public and private dental health care in Norway.
The majority of these have a European background and the same patterns are evident in both public and private dental health care.
Flattening in average caries
After 25 years with a decrease in caries among 12 and 18-year-olds, the dental health status for 2009 shows the same average DMFT per 12 and 18-year-old as in 2008. There are still some differences between the counties, for both 12 and 18-year-olds. However these differences seem to be decreasing.
Note: The average number of teeth with caries from people treated in the age group.
