Vest-Agder: More young farmers

Final figures from the 1999 Census of Agriculture show that the average age of holders in the county of Vest-Agder has fallen from 50.8 years in 1989 to 47.8 years in 1999. The number of farmers younger than 40 years has increased while the number of those elder than 60 years has decreased.

The census also shows that every fifth farmer is single. This represents a less part than in 1989.

Fewer holdings and increased land rental

The number of holdings with agricultural land in use have fallen from 3 200 in 1989 to 2 000 in 1999, a reduction of 37 per cent. It was the minor farms with less than 50 decares land in use that represented the reduction. In 1989 about 1 900 holdings or 59 per cent operated less than 50 decares, and in 1999 the part had fallen to 34 per cent or less than 700 holdings.

Almost two out of three holdings rented land in addition to their own area. 92 000 decares or 46 per cent of all agricultural area in use were rented in 1999. In 1989 about 37 per cent of the land were rented, and less than half of the farmers rented area.

More pork and less eggs

The number of laying hens fell remarkable from 1989 to 1999. In 1999 there were 94 000 hens in Vest-Agder, 45 000 less than ten years earlier. On the other hand the number of breeding pigs increased from 800 in 1989 to 1 400 in 1999. In the same period it was counted more sheep. In 1999 there were 26 000 sheep 1 year and over, an increase of 27 per cent or 5 700 heads since 1989. The number of cattle increased from 24 000 in 1989 to 26 000 in 1999. The number of dairy cows was lower, but the number of other cattle was higher.

With exception of the number of holdings with breeding pigs, there has been a fall in the number of holdings with other livestock. The reduction has been most remarkable for holdings with cattle. In 1999 there were 400 less holdings than ten years earlier.

1 900 full-time equivalents

Over all the labour input corresponded to 1 900 full-time equivalents at the holdings in Vest-Agder. At 800 holdings the total labour input was one full time equivalent or more, while 750 holdings had less than half a full-time equivalent each. Of totally 3 500 holders and spouse/cohabitants 800 worked at least 1 500 man-hours on the holding. In 1989 900 of the holders worked 1 500 man-hours or more on the holding.
