Total tourism consumption NOK 76 billion

Norwegian and foreign tourists spent NOK 76 billion in Norway last year. There has been a slight decrease in total tourism consumption over the last two years, but the activity level in the tourism industries has been somewhat stable.

Spending by Norwegian households amounted to NOK 37 billion and represents almost 50 per cent of the total tourism consumption. Correspondingly, non-residents spent NOK 22 billion and Norwegian trade and industries' spending on business travel was estimated at NOK 17 billion. Since 2000, there has only been an increase in tourism consumption by Norwegian households.

Which goods and services?

Tourists purchase a wide range of goods and services, some of which are classified as characteristic tourism products. The decrease in tourism consumption over the last years is mainly related to the characteristic products, especially due to a decrease in expenditure on transportation services.

The proportion of expenditures on characteristic tourism products has decreased over the last years. 70 per cent of the total tourism consumption comprised consumption of characteristic products, and amounted to almost NOK 54 billion.

Tourism industries

In current prices, output in the tourism industries amounts to around 5 per cent of total output in 2003. The figures in constant prices show a decrease in output over the last two years.

Value added for the tourism industries shows a stable growth in this period, measured in current prices. In relation to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the proportion for tourism industries is just under 4 per cent. The proportion in constant prices decreased slightly over the same time period.

The tourism industries' proportion of total employment was 6.4 per cent in 2003 and has been unchanged over the last three years.
