The police and the prosecuting authority concluded their investigations of 310 500 crimes in 2001, an increase of 15 per cent compared with 1995.

In 2001, the clear-up rate for all crimes was 33 per cent. Prosecution was, however, dropped in 56 per cent of the crimes investigated due to insufficient information about the offender, and 10 per cent of cases were dropped because of deficient evidence. In total, more than 200 000 crimes for which investigation was concluded were dropped without being solved by the police. 8 per cent of the crimes investigated were settled with a ticket fine, and 19 per cent -59 500 crimes- resulted in indictment. 50 per cent more crimes were decided in court in 2001 as in 1995, which is mainly related to the fact that more narcotics crimes resulted in indictment.

More offenders

The number of persons charged with crimes was 51 per cent higher in 2001 as in 1995. More than six per cent of the total male population in the age group 18 to 20 years were charged with one or more crimes in the course of 2001. During the last four years, the number of young people arrested for narcotics crimes rose by 72 per cent, and the number of people below the age of 21 years charged for narcotics crimes is four times higher in 2001 as in 1995.
