The table shows citizenship for researchers/academic staff in the higher education sector and the institute sector across different years. Individuals may have had other citizenships in previous years, or have had dual citizenship from 2020 onwards (if Norwegian citizenship is one of the citizenships, they are considered Norwegian citizens). Country background remains unchanged even if citizenship changes, which means that the numbers in tables showing country background may be higher. In the period 1991-2007, some units only reported aggregated figures for the researcher population, so the numbers differ somewhat from other tables of researchers/academic staff. The starting point is the 20 countries with the most non-Norwegian citizens in the recent years. In the citizenship figures, Norway was included in the country overview both as a selected country and in the Rest of the countries. This was corrected on 19 February 2025.
