There were 1.7 million Norwegian guest nights, a decrease of 1.3 per cent from last year, and 331 000 foreign guest nights. Sweden, USA, the United Kingdom and Germany accounted for 46 per cent of the increase.
– The increase in foreign guest nights is a positive sign in a difficult period. It will be exciting to follow the future development and see if this trend continues in the coming months, says adviser Boyd Oyier in Statistics Norway.
Corrected for The number of overnight stays varies during the year and the pattern is repeated every year. Seasonal adjustment is used to remove what we call seasonal variations, such as public holidays from monthly time series. The adjustment removes the effects of these fluctuations, giving a clearer picture of the time series., the number of guest nights at hotels, camping sites and holiday dwellings increased by 0.2 per cent from October to November. Figure 1 illustrates the underlying trend for foreign guest nights since travel restrictions were lifted in mid-February.
More hotel guest nights than last year
Hotels had 1.8 guest nights in November. This was an increase of 3.3 per cent compared to November last year. Foreign guest nights at hotels increased by 43 per cent, while Norwegian guest nights fell by 1.6 per cent.
- Guest nights at hotels are back to pre-pandemic levels. There were few travel restrictions in November 2021, and a record high number of Norwegian guest nights at hotels. Norwegian guest nights this year were almost as high as last year, says Boyd Oyier.
- Even though the number of foreign guest nights at hotels were lower than in 2019, they were on par with November figures for 2016 to 2018, says Boyd Oyier.
There were more foreign hotel guest nights compared to November last year in almost all counties. The increase was greatest in Oslo and Troms og Finnmark.
Norwegian guest nights decreased the most in Viken and Innlandet, while the largest increases were in Oslo and Troms og Finnmark.
Higher revenue at hotels
The sales figure for the accommodation activity, not including any breakfast or other extra services, even though they might be included in the price of the stay. Sales are published without any VAT. at Norwegian hotels was 1.7 billion in November this year, a 20 per cent increase from the same month last year. At the same time, guest nights have increased by 3.3 per cent. The average price per room was NOK 1 217, 15 per cent higher than in November 2021.
Little change at camping sites and holiday dwellings
There were 138 000 guest nights at Norwegian camping sites in November 2022. This represents a 0.7 per cent decrease from November last year. Norwegian guest nights decreased by 1.9 per cent while foreign guest nights increased by 9.2 per cent.
Guest nights at All types of establishments with a rental unit (apartments, huts etc.) with self-catering and limited service. Stays are short-term increased by 3.1 per cent compared with November last year.
Seasonally adjusted figures for accommodation statistics were first introduced with the publication of the January 2022 statistics. Monthly time series are often characterized by considerable seasonal variations, which might complicate their interpretation. Seasonal adjustment removes the effects of these fluctuations, giving a clearer picture of the time series
In accordance with definitions from Eurostat, refugees should be excluded from tourism statistics and not be considered as guests in the context of tourism statistics when they stay at a tourist accommodation establishment. Refugees from Ukraine cannot be assigned by purpose as holiday, occupation or course, conference. It was not possible to extract all refugees guest nights and some stays are included in the statistics. For accommodation establishments that have more than 25 guest nights from Ukraine during the month, the guest nights have been removed from the statistic. Establishments that are exclusively hosting refugees are not included in the statistics.
