Stock of electric cars doubles in one year

At the end of 2013, 17 770 electric passenger cars were registered in Norway, compared to 8 031 in 2012. Electric light vans are still seldom found on Norwegian roads and the stock increased from 159 to 511 at the end of 2013.

The stock continues to grow. At the beginning of April 2014, the stock had increased by another 5 000, exceeding 23 000.

Most electric cars in Oslo

Forty-four per cent of electric passenger cars were registered in Akershus and Oslo counties . About one third were registered in the three larger cities Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim.

2.9 million passenger cars and light vans

A total of 2.92 million passenger cars and light vans  were registered in Norway at the end of 2013; an increase of 2.2 per cent compared to 2012. This corresponded to 572 passenger cars and light vans per 1 000 inhabitants.

Almost half are diesel

Out of the 2.5 million registered passenger cars at the beginning of this year, about 44 per cent were run on diesel; an increase of 2 percentage points compared to the previous year.

150 000 cars scrapped

In 2013, approximately 150 000 passenger cars and light vans were scrapped for a refund; an increase of 28 per cent compared to the previous year. The average age at the time of scrapping was 18.4 years for passenger cars and 15.4 years for light vans.

No change in average age

At the end of 2013, Norwegian passenger cars were 10.5 years old on average. The average age has remained the same for the last 4 years. In 2010, the average age of passenger cars in selected EU countries was 8.3 years.

Oldest cars in Oppland county

At the end of 2013, the average age for passenger cars registered in Oppland county was 12.8 years. The newest passenger cars were registered in Oslo, with an average age of 8.0 years.
