Stock of private cars is growing older
The stock of private cars in Norway is getting older. For the fifth year in a row the average age for private cars increased, and was 10.3 years of age at the end of 2003. A total of 2 200 989 private cars and vans were registered in Norway in 2003. This was an increase of 2.0 per cent from 2002.
A total of 1 932 663 private cars and 268 326 vans were licensed in Norway at the end of 2003 - an increase of 1.8 and 3.9 per cent respectively from last year.
More cars older than 20 years
At the end of 2003 the stock of private cars above 20 years of age constituted 132 378 cars. This is an increase of 11.8 per cent from the previous year. The portion of private cars older than 20 years old went up from 6.2 per cent in 2002 to 6.8 per cent in 2003. The portion of private cars less than four years old went down from 15.0 per cent to 14.5 per cent in the same period.
Oldest cars in Oppland
The average age for private cars in Oppland was 11.9 years at the end of 2003. This was the highest average in Norway. Nord-Trøndelag and Oppland had the oldest vans, with an average age of 9.6 years. Oslo had the lowest average age for both private cars and vans with 8.8 and 5.0 years respectively.
Almost two Norwegians per car
At the end of last year Norway had 481 private cars or vans registered per 1 000 inhabitant. Akershus had the highest number of cars per 1 000 inhabitant, with 549 cars. Hedmark followed closely with 544 cars per 1 000 inhabitant. Finnmark had the lowest number per 1 000 inhabitant with 415 cars.
Volkswagen most common private car
Volkswagen accounted for 12.4 per cent of the stock of private cars at the end of 2003, with a total of 239 540 cars. This is 2.7 per cent more than in the previous year. Toyota was the second most common make of private car in Norway at the end of 2003, with 212 001 cars or 11.0 per cent of the total stock.
Among the vans, Toyota had the largest portion with 18.5 per cent of the total stock. At the end of 2003 the number of vans of this make amounted to 49 708 registered vans .
